Meet the Makers: Ceramic Artists Shaping American Craft

About the speakers: 

Andrea Garcia is a New Orleans-based ceramic artist, educator, and bartender whose practice is deeply rooted in place, memory, and community. Born and raised in a city where art and everyday life are inseparable, Garcia draws from New Orleans' architecture, rituals, celebrations, and traditions of storytelling to create work that explores grief, resilience, connection, and the ways we remember. Largely self-taught, Garcia built her artistic education through apprenticeships, mentorship, workshops, and residencies, developing a practice that moves fluidly between thrown and handbuilt ceramics, sculpture, and mixed materials. Her work combines ornamental surfaces, architectural references, and unexpected functionality, using slip trailing, image transfers, and layered patterning to create objects that are at once playful, opulent, and contemplative. Garcia's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions in South Korea and at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and has been presented by Companion Gallery and the Clay Center of New Orleans. She has been awarded residencies at Penland School of Craft and the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, among numerous grants, scholarships, and fellowships. Alongside her studio practice, Garcia teaches ceramics at the Clay Center of New Orleans and actively supports mentorship and access within the arts community. Her work reflects a belief that art belongs to everyone, and that opportunities to create can be found everywhere.

Sophie Copeland (b. 1999) is a ceramic artist based in Virginia who has been working in clay since 2018. Copeland’s playful forms and use of hard and soft imagery reimagine traditional tableware and functional ceramics. She adds a delicately personal touch with meticulous hand-built forms and whimsical fine-line paintings to create clay vignettes. Copeland’s work has been chosen for various local and regional group exhibitions, including the 2024 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). She has completed custom commissions for noteworthy clients such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Dolce Vita Shoes and her commercial work is sold in various retail stores nationally.
